Cart Number of … You don’t want rear speakers Review: Samsung HW-Q950T Raises The Sound Bar Greg Tarr, December 9, 2020 14 min Samsung has been churning out impressively high quality soundbars for the past few years now, but with the release of the 2020 flagship HW-Q950T the company has raised the bar to high quality multi-channel surround sound considerably higher. In particular, the Q950T would make the ideal partner to Samsung’s latest high-end TVs thanks to its Q-Symphony feature, which allows the speakers in the TV and the soundbar to work together, adding extra height and presence to the soundstage. The latest Samsung HW-Q950T 9.1.4 Dolby Atmos soundbar uses a mix of physical speakers, psychoacoustic trickery, and Q-symphony sound if you have a 2020 Q-series QLED TV to achieve spectacular sound. The Samsung HW-Q950T is a 9.1.4 setup from 2020. Samsung HW-Q950T and HW-Q900T Soundbar - Review & Comments Excellent, that is what I wanted to confirm - I will go ahead and order the Q950T now :) Thank you! While this may not sound like much on paper, in the flesh it’s significant – and means the Q950T will fit more easily under a wider range of TVs. The Wi-Fi support in conjunction with Samsung’s SmartThings phone/tablet app enables streaming from Apple Music, Amazon Music, Samsung Music, Spotify, TuneIn and Deezer accounts, while the audio file format support takes in Hi-Res Audio, AAC, MP3, OGG, FLAC, ALAC and AIFF. As with the previous flagship Q90R system, the ‘.4’ part of this configuration refers to two upfiring drivers in the soundbar, plus one in each rear speaker. Personally, I preferred the older design, at least where the rears are concerned, but in truth you’re unlikely to see a noticeable difference from a distance. The new rear side channels ensure there are no gaps in the sound, even down the sides of very large rooms, and the improved front/rear balance, together with the new height channel processing, ensures the familiar Dolby Atmos dome of sound never sounds uneven. In this review we shall be focusing more on the soundbar … While you could get a decent system of separates for the money the Q950T costs, the Samsung system gives you much, if not all, of the performance of such a system from a remarkably compact set of speakers. If that’s the case, there are a number of options from Sony, Vizio and JBL that are well worth your time. Plus, its slimmer shape will see it fit under a wider range of TVs too. One last key new feature is Q-Symphony. Dolby Atmos and DTS:X content causes the soundbar to default to those playback modes, but there are a trio of processing modes available for ‘enhancing’ other audio content. Essentially, it’s a surround sound system that offloads some of its job to the walls of the room it occupies. All without costing more than its illustrious HW-Q90R predecessor. You will receive a verification email shortly. This comes in £200 cheaper but, unlike the Q950T, doesn’t carry rear side-channel drivers. At first glance, the Q950T’s compact but robust rears and hulking subwoofer don’t look very different to those of its HW-Q90R predecessor. It has a neutral and balanced sound profile that delivers a thumpy, punchy bass suitable for a variety of audio content. Guess what? The Korean giant has come up with a reply to their competitors LG SN11RG with a 9.14 channel delivery, changing the game in their favor. The dynamic range continues to be prodigious with music, too, hitting bass levels you probably never knew existed in your favourite songs, ensuring low frequencies never become over-dominant or thuddy. They don’t just hang distractingly off the bottom of the mix. In fact, the whole three-dimensional staging of the object-based sound formats is significantly improved over the Q90R, despite that model being excellent in that respect, too. As well as carrying two HDMIs and an optical audio port, the Q950T features easy-to-set-up Bluetooth and Wi-Fi support. Measuring just 69.5mm, it shouldn’t block your TV. But it’s with film and TV soundtracks where it really sets new standards. But does it sound good enough to justify the price? Included in the packaging is enough hardware to also mount the soundbar onto the wall as a height of your choosing (we recommend you measure the distance from the floor to your usual listening height). A soundbar like the Q950T that connects its remote channels via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi isn’t going to have as many thin cables underfoot, despite the need for extra outlets for the satellite speakers and the subwoofer. The Samsung Q950T soundbar is a 9.1.4 channel sound system that offers the latest and greatest software and audio processing available to Samsung devices. Please refresh the page and try again. It’s great to see that the soundbar is now slimmer, which means it will fit more comfortably under a range of different-sized TV. Physical connectivity is fair for a premium soundbar, comprising two HDMI inputs, one HDMI output (with eARC support for obtaining lossless Dolby Atmos / DTS:X soundtracks from compatible TVs) and an optical digital audio input.
