The finish is cool and dry. Also, I'd not get any sweet or earthy notes from the virginia leaf. I still wonder if the dumbest thing I ever did with regards to this hobby was to not buy that second tin. It contains Virginia, Syrian Latakia and eastern Tobaccos. I don't know any of the ingredient ratios, but I was told that the ratios changed every year to compensate for seasonal changes in the individual ingredients' strength and taste. It's the smokiest smoke I've ever had. Yes, it is a nice baccy but, these days there are a TON out there that have tried to copy it over the years and some have absolutely succeeded. I can't make a comparison, but this Original Mixture seems very good to me. Although I prefer this indoors since it's extinct and demands my undivided attention, rightfully so. In that one, the smoky, woody, earthy Cyprian Latakia is the lead component, but lacks the depth and mustiness of earlier productions, and little less is here than before. If you try this, the best thing to do is open the tin, put it in a jar and introduce air every so often(read once per day) for a couple of weeks. I must say I am very disappointed. Blended and aged in the British Isles, Balkan Sobranie Original Smoking Mixture is comprised primarily of Latakia with a mixture of Orientals, Virginias, and other fine tobaccos for a bold, earthy smoking experience with notes of spice and a mild sweetness. It does have an interesting history. Mid-bowl: Aah! What made Balkan Sobranie unique was probably the incense like scent of the Yenidje. The light unflavored soda note or two along with some dry wood, earth, floralness from the yenidje is always noticeable. It's a great mouth pipe, hand pipe, and sitter. I could smoke it all day (and did). One of the best pipe tobaccos i have ever smoke. Flavour stran gely was strong in what seemed nicotine?, not harsh and upon exhale a taste, I assume of the "mountain blue Laktakia" and "macedonian orientals". It was truly like meeting an old friend, after many years of not seeing them, and picking right up where we left off. Presentation, blending, and moisture aside I put flame to tobacco and it took it quite readily, giving nice volumes of fragrant smoke. The blend was found to be too costly to manufacture and so it was simplified, being produced by Gallaher through the 1970's, 80's and then finally ceasing in 1995, with the last tins reaching eager pipesters in 1996. Its post-modern re-incarnation, BALKAN SASIENI, is the same mix, yet not the same mix at all: the grade of tobaccos and the proportions may be the same, but modern-day orientals seem to be blander, more generic than formerly, and the Cypriot ?latakia?, a nice tobacco in itself, is like California ?chablis? I bended my own Balkan Sobrane Original Mixture with these 6 top of the line tobaccos: Wellauers- Latakia .Which is true Syrian Latakia (The real thing)I had five tins sent from Tabac Rhein in Switzerland.

I removed the cake of tobacco and set out to re-hydrate it thus: Placed in a kitchen type strainer (sieve) over a pot of boiling water for a few moments the tobacco softened. Under no circumstances did it live up to everything I have heard and read all this time, unless it is not the same blend any more. The flavor on first light is latakia dominate.
